About the Artist

Joel Lake, a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, has spent his life enjoying the Upper Peninsula's great outdoors - both as an artist and a sportsman. Born in 1972, he alternates his time between the Sault and Lake Superior's southern shore at his family cottage, where he was first introduced to the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula while fishing and hunting with his dad. His respect and appreciation for U.P. wildlife along with his natural talent for drawing have proven to be a perfect match.

Joel specializes in detailed pen & ink drawings using the stippling technique. The technique involves a grouping of dots that form an image. Each illustration is completed using only dots of ink - anywhere from 5,000 to well over 500,000 depending on the complexity of the drawing. Even solid black areas result from overlapping dots of ink. Although very time-consuming and meticulous, his drawings capture realistic detail like no other artistic medium. Some pieces take hundreds of hours to complete.

Lake's work has been featured in gallery exhibitions at the Alberta House Art Gallery in Sault Ste. Marie, as well as the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona. His fine art prints can be found in the private collections of art enthusiasts nationwide. In addition, he has done illustrations for publications, commissioned works, and logo design.

Joel studied art and biology at Albion College prior to graduating with a teaching degree from Lake Superior State University in 1997. He currently teaches biology and physiology at Sault Area High School in Sault Ste. Marie. When not teaching students about the amazing living world around them, he spends most of his time illustrating it.
